Ovulation Method Class
Natural Family Planning
About the class

Ovulation Method classes are taught in a series of three sessions usually scheduled two weeks to a month apart, with individual chart reviews at the client's convenience during or after the class sessions. Reviews can be arranged by contacting an NFP teacher or the archdiocesan coordinator.

All the classes in a series must be attended for a couple to become autonomous users of the method. Additionally, teacher follow-up and chart reviews are necessary to ascertain correct use of this method.

About the method

The Ovulation Method teaches a woman to distinguish between fertile mucus and other, infertile discharges. Couples who wish to postpone pregnancy abstain from sexual contact all the days of fertile mucus discharges (3-5 days) and the following three days of infertile discharge or dryness. Couples who desire to achieve a pregnancy express their conjugal love during those fertile days.

The classes teach couples how to recognize and chart the mucus, how to recognize other fertility signs, handle special circumstances such as stressful situations, breastfeeding, stop the use of the contraceptive pill, infertility concerns, and pre-menopause.

History of the method

The Ovulation Method (OM) was originally developed by Drs. John and Lynn Billings of Melbourne Australia, during the fifties and sixties. It was shown to be 97% effective by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1976. Others have contributed to the research and development so that it is now 99% effective in avoiding a pregnancy. Drs. James Brown and Erik Odeblad have done major research concerning cervical mucus. Dr. Thomas Hilgers at Creighton University developed the Creighton Model to help couples with fertility concerns. Mercedes Wilson of Family of the Americas developed a version particularly well suited to the Hispanic community. Dr. Hanna Klaus has a program directed toward teenage girls. Many others have helped to apply the method.
