Cardinal Maida's Respect Life Message for 2008
August 19, 2008

Dear Father,

On October 5, 2008, we will observe Respect Life Sunday and in this election year, which will include for us in Michigan a ballot initiative attempting to allow for the destruction of human embryos, it is important for us to sharpen our knowledge of the issues facing our society.  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have provided a packet of resources for the observance of Respect Life Sunday.  The Michigan Catholic Conference will also offer valuable resources more focused on local issues.  These resources will help improve our understanding of the issue and turn to the Lord, in prayer, to deepen our passion to oppose the destruction or degradation of human life.

During Pope Benedict's visit to the United States, the Holy Father frequently reminded the faithful of our responsibility to promote a culture of life.  While commending the Church in America, he also offered caution with regard to the ways the value of life is undermined by secularism and an attempt to separate faith and life.  He reminded all Catholics of the need to be a voice of hope in a world where "self-centeredness, greed, violence and cynicism so often seem to choke the fragile growth of grace in people's hearts" (Homily, St. Patrick's Cathedral, April 19, 2008 | full text).

As followers of Jesus Christ, we pray that His will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven.  We know that this will of the Father necessarily involves a deep respect for His creation and the sanctity of human life.  As we go about working for this will to be done on Earth, may others see the great love we have for Him and for all His creation.  I trust you will find these resources helpful in proclaiming the Gospel of Life.

May every good blessing be with you, as I remain

Sincerely yours in the Lord,

†Adam Cardinal Maida
Archbishop of Detroit
