Archdiocese wins awards in recent contests

Detroit — Several departments in the Archdiocese of Detroit won The Communicator Award 2006 for Print Competition for "Project Eternity: Papal Transition" in the international contest recognizing outstanding work in the communication field.
The award was for the work regarding the life and death of Pope John Paul II and the transition to Pope Benedict XVI done by the archdiocese, the Michigan Catholic, the Communications Department, the Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND), the Information and Technology Department, the Print Shop, Fr. Timothy R. Pelc and Mae Christine Bobbitt.
There were 14 winners among 5,214 entries.

Larry Peplin | In addition, The Michigan Catholic recently received three awards in the Excellence in Media/Best Journalism of the Year from the Detroit Society of Professional Journalists.
Managing editor Marylynn G. Hewitt, SFO, won second place in the criticism category for her reviews of the television special "Surviving Sudan," the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" and interview with John Michael Talbot, "Troubadour for the Lord."
Photographer Larry Peplin won second place for "The Year of the Eucharist" photo taken Oct. 9 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Hewitt also took third place in the general reporting category for "Medical Mercy Mission" regarding the work of the World Medical Relief African Partners in Nigeria.
CTND also won first place for the special "World Youth Day 2005 — Cologne and Home." That award went to John Quayle, writer/producer; Andrezj Milosz, videographer; Ron Pangborn, editor; Curtis Peters, and graphic artist.
