The Michigan Catholic asked several Catholic high schools to select a student in the class of 2007 to answer the following question: "How should my Catholic school help me grow closer to God in the upcoming school year?" Here are the answers we received:
"I hope that they will encourage my peers and me to use prayer as a solution to a problem, because I know that that's something that a lot of us don't think of, and we do face a lot of pressures these days."
"As I have progressed through Shrine Grade School and Shrine Academy, I grew as a Catholic through constant sacramental awareness as part of the curriculum. However, high school seems to put a greater emphasis on academics and getting into the best colleges rather than putting an equal effort on all parts of education. In the effort to grow closer to God in the upcoming school year, my school should … utilize our parish, the National Shrine of the Little Flower. My Catholic high school should continue to teach religion classes, take notice to the wonderful celebration of Mass in its proper setting, and indulge in sacramental awareness exercises, like retreats, more often."
"My Catholic school can bring me closer to God through service in the Academy of the Sacred Heart office, because that way we can learn about the outside community and bring our community and the outside community closer together by helping one another. Service is what God calls us to do, so that would bring me closer to God."
"There are basically two ways that my Catholic School should continue helping me grow closer to God. Religion classes and the twice-weekly celebration of Mass provide a foundation for my faith; they give me the knowledge to understand my religion and its origins. To better my personal relationship with God, we pray at the beginning of each school day and at the start of every class, sporting event and extracurricular activity. This constantly reminds us that God is present in all that we do."
