Jesuits host annual Red Mass

Joe Kohn of The Michigan Catholic

Detroit — Judges and lawyers filled the pews of SS. Peter & Paul (Jesuit) Church downtown Sept. 26 for the annual Red Mass celebration, held especially for those in the legal profession.

The Mass was celebrated as part of University of Detroit Mercy's Founders Week celebration highlighting the spirit of the Jesuit university, which houses a law school adjacent to SS. Peter & Paul.

Main celebrant Fr. Joseph Daoust, SJ, president of the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif., said in his homily that it was the congregation's call to spread justice by focusing on the needs of the least in society – feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned.

"If you do that," Fr. Daoust said, "then in the ultimate court, in the only court that matters, the Judge will say, 'You took care of them for me. This is a life that is wonderful; therefore come. You have served my society.'"
