Honor student earns tickets to Tigers game

Detroit – As president of the Ladywood High School student council, Becca Zajac has spent plenty of time with pep rallies, homecoming and other events to boost school morale.
"My focus this year was to pump up the school spirit," said Zajac, a scholar athlete National Honor Society member.
Little did she know, she'd get a boost in her own moral, courtesy of Wayne County Commissioner Laura Cox and the Detroit Tigers.
Zajac, a parishioner at St. Genevieve Parish in Livonia, was awarded two free tickets to the Tigers Oct. 16 home playoff game against the Oakland Athletics. The commissioner singled her out to receive the tickets – which were confiscated in a sting operation to catch illegal scalpers – because of her extracurricular activities and academic prowess.
Because of her straight As, Zajac got to see the Tigers trounce the A's on their way to winning the American League Pennant.
"It was an excellent surprise," said Zajac, who attended the game with her father. "I had been following the Tigers the whole time. The seats were awesome, and the people around us were very nice."
The Tigers won the game 3-0 and, the next day, earned a trip to the World Series.
Commissioner Cox personally handed the tickets to Zajac in the hallway of the Livonia high school, calling her an "excellent" student and commending her for her involvement in the school and in sports.
Zajac plays on the school's varsity volleyball and track teams. She also volunteers to coach the seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball team at St. Genevieve grade school, her alma mater. In addition to school and all her extracurricular activities, Zajac holds a part-time job at a restaurant.
Receiving the tickets was a thrill, Zajac said, especially because she received a lot of compliments from her friends.
"They were just so happy," she said. "That was the best part. Everyone said, 'Oh, you so deserve it.' And everybody knows how much I love the Tigers."
