Bishop Cooney undergoes quadruple bypass
by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic Published January 11, 2008
Detroit – Bishop Patrick R. Cooney of Gaylord was recovering Monday in a northern Michigan hospital after quadruple bypass surgery over the weekend.
The 73-year-old former Detroit auxiliary bishop, who has headed the Gaylord Diocese since 1990, was admitted to hospital last Saturday after complaining of chest pains.
Upon examination, doctors found him to be having a heart attack.
The surgery was performed late that night.
"We are extremely thankful for the many prayers that are being raised for Bishop Cooney, and we are hopeful for his complete recovery," said Candace Neff, communications director for the Diocese of Gaylord.
"The outpouring of love and concern for our bishop is deeply appreciated by his family and the entire Catholic community. We know that he will face a long period of recuperation, and are also confident that his need for privacy during this process will be understood and respected," she added.
Bishop Cooney's illness struck just before the scheduled ordination of Fr. Joseph Muszkiewicz, which had been set for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cathedral.
The ordination ceremony was postponed until last Sunday afternoon when Detroit Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn traveled to Gaylord to preside.
Bishop Cooney's brother, Fr. Michael Cooney, is pastor of St. Peter Parish in Mount Clemens.
The Diocese of Gaylord includes the 21 northernmost counties in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
It has 81 parishes and 17 schools, and a Catholic population of more than 70,000.
Get well wishes may be sent to Bishop Cooney at 611 W. North St., Gaylord 49735.
