Detroit Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn elevates the host during Mass at Rainbow XXVI.

Detroit — During Mass at Rainbow XXVI, the annual Catholic Youth Organization conference for high school-aged Catholics, Detroit Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn issued two challenges to the 2,000 teenagers in attendance:

1. Go to Mass every week — "not every other week. Every week."

2. Use your talents for the good of others.

"Be sure, every weekend, you come to Mass," said Bishop Quinn from an altar in the Marriot Hotel ballroom in Detroit's Renaissance Center. "If not, you're not allowing Jesus to form you. Commit yourself to that, so that Jesus Christ can really be the center of your life."

Bishop Quinn said the young people are "a sign of hope to our world" and a gift within the Church. On behalf of priests in the archdiocese, he asked the youths to remain close to their parishes.

"We need you in our parishes," the bishop said. "We need your faith, your vocation, your energy, your commitment. You renew that in us."

Secondly, the bishop said the Lord has a plan for everyone, so the young people should use their gifts to help others.

"You have special gifts and certain talents," he said. "And that's for the good of others. When you use those gifts, you can change the world."

When young people commit themselves to be formed by Christ, he added, "marvelous things can happen."

"Go out and let others know, 'I've met the Messiah. I'm formed in Him," Bishop Quinn said. "And bring his love to your parish communities."
