Detroit — Cardinal Adam Maida said the celebration of his birthday would be "a little muted this year," coming so soon after the recent death of his mother at the age of 99.
"But I can't complain to the Lord too much, because how many people have their mother around when they're almost 78 years old?" he said in remarks after the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council presented him with a cake and sang "Happy Birthday" to him at their March 4 quarterly meeting at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
The APC is the principal lay advisory body to the cardinal.
At 78, as of March 16, the cardinal is the oldest serving Catholic bishop in the United States. As required of all bishops, Cardinal Maida turned in his resignation when he reached 75. Both the late Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have asked the cardinal to continue in the post for the time being.
There has been speculation that a successor might be named this year, but there was similar speculation last year, as well.
