Thieves steal money in St. John Neumann break-in

by Joe Kohn of The Michigan Catholic
Published September 19, 2008

Detroit — Last Sunday night at St. John Neumann Parish in Canton, thieves ransacked administrative offices and broke into the parish's safe, making off with thousands of dollars in the parish's Sunday collection.

Pastor Fr. George Williams said the parish community was "shocked" as news of the break-in spread early in the week. Still, he said, there was relief that the thieves didn't steal or desecrate any sacred items in the church itself.

"I'm assuring them that the church wasn't bothered," he said. "That seems to be their biggest concern."

As of Tuesday, Fr. Williams said the parish was still trying to tally what had been stolen — likely to be between $5,000 and $8,000. The thieves broke a door and the windows of two interior doors, then went through several of the offices inside. Unfortunately, the parish's safe wasn't strong enough to stop the intruders.

"It looked like Superman put his fist through the safe," Fr. Williams said.

The parish is working with the Canton Police Department on the investigation. Meanwhile, Fr. Williams says, the parish community will offer prayers for the thieves and continue to focus on the eternal treasures of faith and hope in the Lord.

"Regardless of what happens, God will see us through and provide for us," Fr. Williams said. "It will ultimately draw us together as we pray."
