Black, Hispanic leaders on 'Dialogue'
by The Michigan Catholic Published November 28, 2008
Detroit — CTND's "Dialogue" program looks at archdiocesan ministries to black and Hispanic Catholics, as moderator Ned McGrath interviews John Thorne, coordinator of Black Catholic Ministry, and Fernando Perales, coordinator of Hispanic Affairs for the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Cardinal Adam Maida named Perales to his post back in the spring; he named Thorne to his position this fall.
"In large part, the reason we have these positions is due to the advocacy of (auxiliary) Bishops Daniel Flores and John Quinn," said McGrath, director of communications for the archdiocese.
"Working in their respective regions, they saw the need and value in specialized, targeted contact and support for the Hispanic and African-American communities. When presented with the bishops' proposals, Cardinal Maida agreed, understanding and appreciating the unique role between culture and religion in large, established ethnic communities," he continued.
McGrath discusses some of these cultural tie-ins during the program.
"Fernando and John are the right people at the right time. They bring great energy, experience, and evangelization skills to their ministries. We're lucky to have them on board," he added.
The program began showing on CTND, the archdiocese's cable TV station, earlier this week. Remaining showtimes are:
- Saturday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
- Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m.

- Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.
