This month of September, as I continue to reflect on various aspects of our 175-year history as a local Church, I would like to focus on the ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons – those who have gone before us and those who now serve as ministers of Word and sacrament here in the archdiocese.

Teens' Blanketed with Love helps priest's family in Africa

Grosse Pointe Farms — Msgr. Patrick Halfpenny had just learned about the blanket ministry being launched by a teenager in his parish Sunday, Aug. 17, when later that day his associate pastor got word about the death of a brother in his home country in Africa.

Detroit — Michigan's Board of State Canvassers approved a ballot proposal for November's election that, if passed, would prohibit restrictions to research that would destroy living human embryos.

Detroit — The Lathrup Village abortion clinic where the remains of 23 babies were found discarded in trash receptacles earlier this year has been charged with 12 counts of improper disposal of medical records.

Two men charged in copper theft from closed church

Detroit — Two Detroit men were charged last Friday with stealing copper eaves troughs and other roofing materials from the former St. Rita Church in Detroit's North End.

Local Catholic church hosts Lutheran bishop's funeral in ecumenical gesture

Detroit — Fr. Randall Phillips called it a gesture of common humanity to open up his church to the family of Bishop John H.K. Schreiber, a Lutheran bishop, after his death two weeks ago.

7-year-old insists her birthday party help China's earthquake victims

Westland — When 7-year-old Victoria Thor planned her birthday party in June, she wasn't thinking about presents. Her mind, instead, was occupied with the victims of the May 12 earthquake in China, where thousands were killed and even more were left homeless by the natural disaster.

First vicariate-wide festival to benefit outreach ministries

Detroit – It would be hard to top the Renaissance Vicariate when it comes to the diversity of the parishes that make it up – everything from poor ones in Detroit's central city to wealthy ones in the Grosse Pointes, from ones with fewer than 150 families to ones with more than 2,000.

CSA: Reaching goal still leaves shortfall

As we continue to commemorate our 175th anniversary, this month I would like to reflect on the importance of social communications and, in particular, on Catholic media in the Archdiocese of Detroit and its critical role to proclaim the Gospel and deepen our faith life.
