Witness of the lay faithful is important in the story of our Church

'Destroyed anyway' no argument for Prop. 2

Detroit — The argument that thousands of frozen embryos are destined to be destroyed anyway may often be cited in support of Proposal 2, but it doesn't cut any ice with Janet Smith, Ph.D., noted pro-life author and seminary professor.

Bad policies, poor judgment, deceit all figured into economic crisis
Robert Delaney
Detroit — Bad government policies, imprudent decisions by both lenders and borrowers, and no little amount of deceit all played a role in bringing about the current financial crisis, says a University of Detroit Mercy economics professor.

Fr. Richard C. Macey
The readings for this feast displace the readings for the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. St. John Lateran Basilica is the cathedral of Rome, the place where the pope celebrates official functions as the bishop of Rome, for example, Holy Thursday Mass, Corpus Christi procession, etc.

Work is more than the 'bottom line,' cardinal says at Mass for Commerce
Kristin Lukowski
Detroit — Those attending the Mass for Commerce last week were more than business people who happened to be Catholic; they were people who incorporate their Catholic faith into their daily lives.

We follow Christ in life and death
Fr. Richard C. Macey
The readings for this feast displace the readings for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the old liturgy, the observance of the feast would have been transferred to Monday. Praying for the dead is even recorded in the Old Testament: 2 Maccabees 12:43-46. Any of the readings used for funeral Masses may be used on this day. I will select three of the possible readings for reflection.

Service to the Lord provides our list of duties
Fr. Richard C. Macey
The prophet refers to the Persian King Cyrus as "His anointed," the messiah of the Lord. Cyrus II overthrew the Babylonians in 539 B.C. He died in battle 10 years later. This is the only non-Jewish leader in the Scriptures to have the title of "messiah." Cyrus released the Judean exiles, so that they could return to their homeland. He allowed them to worship the Lord and rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Although Cyrus was not a follower of the Lord, the Lord was the power behind the throne in this passage. God intervened in the history of the nations "for the sake of Jacob … my chosen one."
