Lawyers to honor Cardinal Maida
by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic Published April 24, 2009
Detroit – Cardinal Adam Maida will be honored by the Catholic Lawyers Society of Detroit with its Msgr. Malloy Lifetime Achievement Award Sunday, April 26.
The award is given annually to a Catholic lawyer or judge whose service and character have exemplified and advanced the highest values of both the Catholic faith and the legal profession.
"We thought it especially appropriate to honor Cardinal Maida in this year of his retirement as archbishop of Detroit," said Livonia attorney Joseph P. McGill, president of the Catholic Lawyers Society of Detroit.
"Long before he came to Detroit, then-Fr. Maida — as a civil lawyer for the Church — played an important role in clarifying the legal status of Catholic institutions. And as bishop of Green Bay and then Detroit's archbishop, he brought his background in both civil and canon law to the deliberations of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as it shaped Church policy on important issues," added McGill, a member of SS. Peter & Paul (Jesuit) Parish in Detroit.
The award will be presented at the society's annual meeting at the St. John Center in Plymouth Township.
Cardinal Maida has a juris doctor degree in civil law and a licentiate in canon law. He is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Msgr. Malloy award is named for the late Msgr. Charles J. Malloy, who served on the archdiocesan Metropolitan Tribunal as a canon lawyer. During his years of service he was at various times promoter of justice, defender of the bond and a judge.
The Catholic Lawyers Society is a special interest bar association consisting of lawyers, judges and law students committed to advancing members' spiritual growth, promoting high ethical principles within the legal profession, and addressing social and moral challenges within society through works of charity, mercy and justice, following the example of Jesus Christ.
