Michigan Catholic Radio hopes end to broadcasting is temporary
The Michigan Catholic Published July 31, 2009
Detroit - John F.X. Browne, president of Michigan Catholic Radio, said he is sad for the end of the station's on-air broadcast but hopeful he'll be able to bring it back in the future.
Today is the last day scheduled for the station's broadcasting after more than 11 years on the station WCAR-AM 1900. The station has been recently sold and Michigan Catholic Radio (no affiliation with The Michigan Catholic) was unable to work out arrangements with the new owners to continue broadcasting, Browne said.
"We are looking to see if we can find another station that we can broadcast over," he said.
In the interim, Browne is looking to the future, he said, and hopes to provide Internet-based broadcasting, although it will be a few weeks until the details are worked out.
Michigan Catholic Radio, which broadcast 24 hours a day, has been an all-volunteer operation, so the station has existed through the generosity of volunteers and listeners, he said. His listeners are disappointed and have told him they hope Michigan Catholic Radio comes back on another station.
"Most of our listeners are very, very loyal, and are sorry to see it go," he said. "It is going to be a sad day for all concerned."
Browne said he has no hard feelings toward the new owner: "He's got his business decisions to make and we have ours, and they didn't mesh," he said. "Maybe God's telling us to do something else. We have a lot of people praying about this."
He hopes to update the Web site every week with Michigan Catholic Radio news; visit www.michigancatholicradio.org. On that site, Browne also invited listeners to write to them at PO Box 4905, Troy, 48099.
Michigan Catholic Radio had previously been trying to purchase WCAR, but withdrew that offer last month, according to a message to readers on its site. It was sold to Birach Broadcasting Corp., with which discussion had been taking place to continue broadcasting, to no avail.
The area's only other Catholic station is Ave Maria Radio, WDEO-AM 990, based in Ann Arbor.
