Cardinal Maida's Mother Dies
Sophie Cieslak Maida
 
Surrounded by her family at her bedside in prayer, Sophie Cieslak Maida, 99, died January 30, 2008 of natural causes at her home in Scott Township, PA.  The rosary was being recited at the time of her death. 

The daughter of Polish immigrants, she is the mother of three sons: Cardinal Adam Maida, archbishop of Detroit; Fr. Thaddeus (Ted) Maida, a priest of the Pittsburgh diocese; and Daniel Maida of Presto, PA.
 
She is predeceased by her husband, Adam, and three siblings. Survivors include a younger sister, Stella Cieslak Hayla of South Hempstead, NY, three grandsons, two great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters.
 

Funeral Notice
Visitation: Friday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m.
