Bishop Schoenherr Funeral Liturgy
News Release | Biography of Bishop Schoenherr

Walter J. Schoenherr
Over 100 priests and 800 church goers on hand for the funeral liturgy of Retired Auxiliary Bishop Walter Schoenherr.  Cardinal Adam Maida serves as principal celebrant and Retired Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton as homilist.

"We loved Bishop Schoenherr for of his sincerity, his cheerfulness, his hopefulness, and his hospitality," says Bishop Gumbleton. "Like a good shepherd, he knew and loved the people he served." Bishop Gumbleton also talks about Bishop Schoenherr's commitment to justice, especially the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

In Cardinal Maida's closing remarks, he says Bishop Schoenherr was a man of prayer and a "model priest" during his years of ministry. "He was comfortable with who he was," says the cardinal.
