Cardinal Adam Maida, archbishop of Detroit, will celebrate a Mass at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 9844 Woodward, Detroit, in honor of the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Detroit. A reception will follow on the cathedral plaza. The public is invited to attend.
The Archdiocese of Detroit will host a live Webcast of the Mass at
www.aodonline.org. The Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND) will record the Mass and broadcast it on May 23 at 7 p.m.; May 26, at 4 p.m.; May 27 at 12 p.m.; May 28 at 9 a.m.; and May 29 at 6:30 p.m. CTND is seen on Comcast Channel 296, Bright House Channel 16, and Wyandotte Cable Channel 73.
The Detroit Diocese was established in March of 1833 by Pope Gregory XVI. At that time, it included what is now Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, as well as parts of North and South Dakota. Additional historical information can be found on the web at

"The Mass will be a celebration of the many gifts and blessings the Church of Detroit has received over the last 175 years," said Cardinal Maida.
Concelebrating the Mass with Cardinal Maida will be Cardinal Edmund Szoka, president emeritus of the Government of Vatican City State and archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Detroit; and Detroit Auxiliary Bishops John Quinn, Francis Reiss, and Daniel Flores.
Also concelebrating will be Bishop Joseph Imesch, bishop emeritus of Joliet; Bishop Ibrahim N. Ibrahim, bishop of the Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in the U.S.A.; Bishop Nicholas Samra, former auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Newton; and 56 priests and 23 deacons from the Archdiocese of Detroit.
The Mass will begin with a procession that will include a parade of nations with participants wearing ethnic costumes of Albania, Central America, France, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Native Americans, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, Slovakia, and Vietnam. Music will be under the direction of Nancy Deacon. Ethnic music by local composers will be featured.
