Grief and Loss
“God of all consolation, in your unending love and mercy for us you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life. Show compassion to your people in their sorrow.
“Be our refuge and our strength to lift us from the darkness of this grief to the peace and light of your presence….” (Pastoral Care of the Sick)
“The Disciple-Community does not shake off sorrow as though it were no concern of its own, but willingly bears it.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it…” (1 Corinthians 12:26)
Grief can be described as the normal yet confusing emotional responses to significant loss. Grieving is the intentional work a person engages in following loss.
Grief hurts and is common to all people. Grief is universal and inescapable even when its existence and impact are denied. Grief work is a journey filled with ups and downs, heaviness and hope. The grief journey is one that does not have to be taken alone.
The Office For Family Ministry supports parishes in reaching out to and supporting all those on the grief journey.
