Homosexuality Support for Families with Gay and Lesbian Persons
"For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus…through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father…so then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God." (Ephesians 2:10, 3:19)
"…Though at times you may feel discouraged, hurt, or angry, do not walk away from your families, from the Christian community, from all those who love you. In you God's love is revealed. You are always our children." (USCCB, Always Our Children, 1997)
As 'domestic church', a fundamental role of family is to help each and every member believe that they are "God's beloved". The Archdiocese, along with the United States Bishops, recognizes that due to the diverse circumstances of life today, families may need support to live out God's covenantal relationship of unconditional love. The Office for Family Ministry seeks to reach out in solidarity to gay and lesbian individuals, their parents and family members so that they may:
- Recognize that they are not alone, and find support among other Catholic families dealing with this issue
- Come to know and better understand the Church's teaching on homosexuality and believe they are welcome within the Christian community
The Office for Family Ministry reaches out to all God's people, and works to build bridges of communication, understanding, and reconciliation within families by providing:
- Referrals to professional services and support groups when requested
- Opportunities for spiritual growth through prayer and spiritual enrichment
- Printed resources, on-going education and in-service opportunities for families, parishes, schools and diocesan office and agencies
