Catechist Formation

The response to the call to minister as a catechist includes willingness to share one's time and talent in catechizing others, as well as commitment to one's own continued growth in faith, understanding, and catechetical skills. Catechist Formation helps to bring catechists to a unified vision of Sacred Scripture, Catholic doctrine, spiritual and moral development, prayer and service.

""Being called to the service of catechesis does not of itself imply an ability to exercise this service, and neither does it involve an innate competence. Vocation is also a call to training which is permanent, systematic and whole."

Cardinal Hayes, Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy. The Fundamental Importance of Catechesis, 1998.

Catechist formation sessions in the Archdiocese of Detroit are offered through:

Consult your Parish Catechetical Leader (DRE), Adult Faith Formation Coordinator or Principal for specific dates and locations.

"Catechesis aims to bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him."

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. National Directory for Catechesis, No. 19A. Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005.

"Therefore, the careful selection of women and men called to be catechists and their initial and ongoing formation are the greatest factors in assuring the quality of catechesis in the parish, school and diocese. Formation will help the catechist grow in maturity as an adult, a believer and an apostle."

Congregation for the Clergy. General Directory for Catechesis,
No. 238. Washington, DC: United States Catholic Conference, 1998.
