2009 Ecuador Experience Day 3: Justin Pelko

The Llama Delivery to the Shipala Community
Today we got up at about 8:00am and began to ready ourselves for breakfast, a tri-lingual mass, delivering llamas, and a day at the markets in Riobamba. We arrived at the Shipala community and helped the local people set up for the tri-lingual mass. Next was the mass that turned out to be more Quechan and Spanish than anything else, but it was interesting to see how closely an English mass and a Quechan mass resemble each other, not to mention a mass that was interrupted by a sheep making noises on the top of the bus, God only knows how that happened. Following the mass was a very different but nonetheless welcoming greeting/dance performed by the locals. After the celebration it was our delight in seeing the faces and reactions of the very thankful and humble appreciations of those who were selected to receive the llamas. Finally it was time to do the little work that they had for us, but they were very gracious for our gifts and our work.

Day 1After visiting the Shipala community it was time to do some shopping at the markets in Riobamba. The group decided to split up into smaller groups and do their shopping. After two hours or so, the shopping was completed then we left to go to the grocery store and made a quick stop at Ecuadorian fast food place. Following the shopping Joyce and Maria had a meeting with the Bishop while the rest of group left to return to the retreat center. We then had dinner and after that was reflection and meditation. The night was then topped off in usual fashion which included journaling and euchre.
