Council of Catholic Women Frequently Asked Questions
Who are we? The Council of Catholic Women/Archdiocese of Detroit is an organization for Catholic women of all parish groups, organizations/clubs and individual members. All Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit are encouraged to become "individual members" of the Archdiocese of Detroit CCW and the National Council of Catholic Women.
What are the dues? There is a $15.00 annual membership fee for a Catholic woman to become a member of the Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit. This entitles her to our Newsletter, The Communiqué, which is published six times a year; all meeting correspondence, and a vote at our Board Meetings and at our Annual Business Meeting.
The fee for a Catholic woman to become a member of the National Council of Catholic Women is $25.00 a year. You will receive the Catholic Woman Magazine which is published every other month; you will have a vote at the National Convention, and by logging on to the National Council of Catholic Women you can get the Bulletin Board which gives you information on books, legislation, prayer, etc.
A Parish Women's Organization or a Catholic Women's Organization can become an affiliate for $105.00 a year. Dues are payable no later than December 31, 2008. Each affiliate has a representative to whom all material is sent but all members of the affiliate are automatically members of Council. This makes your organization a member of the National Council of Catholic Women and the Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit
We, however, are encouraging individual membership in the CCW/AD and the NCCW at this time.
What do we do? We promote programs that individuals and organizations can choose to support yearly, the Red Cross Blood Bank, Veterans Hospitals, Operation Layette, Water for Life, The Madonna Plan, Penny Pot for the International Book Project and religious activities such as Regional Days and the Biennial Assembly.
What are our objectives? The objectives of the Council of Catholic Women are as follows:
- To unite Catholic organizations and individual Catholic Women of this Archdiocese to develop their leadership potential, and to motivate and assist them to act upon current issues effecting church and society.
- To provide spiritual motivation and to promote a personal relationship with Jesus through the intercession of Mary, Our Lady of Good Counsel.
- To cooperate with the Archbishop and to assist the Archdiocesan staff, departments and commissions.
- To be a representative Catholic women's group to relate to other cultural, civic and religious organizations.
How did the Council start? The Bishops of the United States founded the Council of Catholic Women in 1920. The late Edward Cardinal Mooney established the CCW/AD in 1938 in Detroit. The first all day conference was held on Saturday, March 18, 1939. We are affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) and the World Union of Catholic Women's Organization (WUCWO) in approximately 67 countries.
