Disabilitiy Concerns and the Parish Community
The moral mandate to create an environment which fully recognizes the dignity, rights, and potential of all people, brought into focus by the Pastoral Statement of the U.S. Bishops in 1978, is now supported by law with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The strength and worth of the human person are not granted by government decree or by the judgment of the community. Over the centuries, the Scriptures and the Church have consistently proclaimed that every human life is a precious gift of a loving God. That fact alone should be enough to require respect and reverence for every human person.
As Christians, we have an even more compelling rationale—the example and presence of Jesus. Christ's life given for us teaches that every human life is of such value to God that He would sacrifice His only Son. God continues to be present whenever and wherever we gather in His name.
The information in this section is designed to provide a practical resource or a starting point. It was compiled through the efforts and support of the Archdiocese of Detroit Disability Concerns Advisory Board in cooperation with the Department of Parish Life and Services. The information gathered is a sampling of resources available as of August, 2004 and is subject to change. We hope these resources will facilitate the process of enabling all persons to worship, give service, learn and celebrate together.
