HIV / AIDS - A Catholic Response

Over the last decade, AIDS has become a major concern within the United States. The response of the Archdiocese of Detroit has been on an individual basis with priests, chaplains and lay people incorporating this new specialty into their everyday work.

In the Spring of 1992, Adam Cardinal Maida issued a Pastoral Statement "Dress Their Wounds" concerning the issues of AIDS. Prior to that statement, the United States Bishops issued "Called to Compassion and Responsibility; A Response to the HIV/AIDS Crisis".

Out of this call to awarness and need the AIDS Ministry Forum was formed. The AIDS Ministry Forum does not provide direct service, but rather embraces and promotes the direct service of Catholics who are involved in ministry with persons with AIDS, their families and friends.

Education
The AIDS Ministry Forum works in cooperation with the Office for Faith Formation & Catechetics in the Department of Education to encourage the implementation of The National Catholic Education Association's Curriculum "A Catholic Educational Approach to HIV" with Religious Education Programs, Catholic Schools and Youth Ministry Groups.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Presentations
AIDS Ministry Forum encourages and supports all efforts to increase people's knowledge of HIV/AIDS awareness. We would be glad to assist with a speaker for a parish or group.
