Success Story: Soup 4 You

A group of Helping Hands Ministry volunteers gathers under the direction of an appointed one-time head chef who organizes a group soup-making project called Soup4You.

Ingredients can be donated from the wider community or purchased.  A favorite recipe (of the chef’s) is formulated to make between 30 and 40 quarts.

On the first day, one crew makes the soup, cools and refrigerates it overnight.  Next day, the second crew applies custom made freezer proof labels (includes ingredients), then fills and freezes quart-size plastic containers.  Those who minister to our homebound parishioners are informed and the soup is hand-carried to those in need of nourishment – body and/or soul. Based on supply and demand, we’ve repeated this project on a quarterly basis.

It’s popular with our homebound ministers and much appreciated by the homebound and those going through difficult transitions (many notes of appreciation received).

We got this ministry started by running ads in the bulletin asking for interested volunteers (each round of soup making is re-advertised).  Developed an email correspondence group from that response.  This year implemented a small budget to cover extraneous costs.  Ingredients are donated from the wider community through a duplicate food card system.

This outreach is provided quarterly.  It is sustained through efforts, enthusiasm and support of volunteers.
