History of CHSL

For more than 82 years, Catholic high schools in metro Detroit have competed for league championships and bragging rights. While today's league – the Detroit Catholic High School League – was officially adopted in April 1926, the first documented history of a "Catholic league" occurred in 1921 with the formation of the Catholic Interscholastic League. The first Catholic Interscholastic championship was determined in basketball, which initially was home to six varsity (Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Windsor Assumption, Detroit Holy Name, Detroit Holy Rosary, Detroit Holy Redeemer, and University of Detroit) teams. In 1922, the basketball league lost the University of Detroit squad, but welcomed five new entries – Detroit Annunciation, Detroit St. Theresa of Avila, Detroit St. Joseph, Detroit St. Patrick, and Detroit St. Leo.

In the fall of 1922, football was introduced to the Catholic Interscholastic League with nine teams competing for the first gridiron championship. They were (with final record in parentheses): Detroit Sacred Heart Seminary (5-1-1), St. Leo (5-1-2), Holy Redeemer (4-1), Pontiac St. Frederick (3-1), St. Joseph (1-1-2), St. Patrick (1-2), Holy Rosary (1-5-2), St. Mary's (0-3), and Holy Name (0-5).

On the final week of the season, Sacred Heart played St. Leo with the inaugural title at stake. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie, thus giving Sacred Heart – by virtue of overall winning percentage – the championship.

Yet, St. Leo represented the Detroit Catholic schools in the state's Catholic Interscholastic football championship on Thanksgiving Day. The Lions lost to Bay City St. James, 30-0.

On April 15, 1926, the Michigan Catholic newspaper reported that a new high school league was planned. Nine Catholic schools from Detroit and vicinity organized the Detroit Catholic High School Athletic League, beginning with the 1926 baseball season.

Annunciation breezed through the season with a perfect 8-0 record. Pitcher Alphonse Hoerauf earned all eight victories and tossed a no-hitter along the way for the Cougars, who were coached by William Phillips.

The other eight teams in the inaugural baseball campaign were Holy Redeemer (5-3), St. Leo (4-2), Grosse Pointe St. Ambrose (4-3), Detroit Visitation (3-4), St. Patrick (3-5), St. Joseph (2-5), St. Theresa of Avila (1-7), and River Rouge Our Lady of Lourdes (0-5).

Since then, the Catholic League has crowned more than 1,400 league champions, and member schools have won 261 state titles since 1927, the same year that the University of Detroit's golf team -- coached by C.H. Chamberlain -- became the first CHSL team to win a state title.
