Athletic Awards (Recommendations)

 
1.a. Emblematic recognition of athletic achievement is traditional.Awards should be considered as mementos or recognition for participation in athletics, not something to which an athlete is entitled because of services rendered.
b. The award is made to individuals by the school.
 
2. All members of a team or individuals, for any athletic award, must have conformed to State and local eligibility rules.
 
3. A major letter award is an eight-inch (8") large block letter, awarded to those players who satisfy the requirements as set forth by each individual school.
 
4. Student Manager Awards: The student must conform to the eligibility rules, the same as the team which he manages, with the exception that he need not pass a physical examination.
 
5. Other Awards: For a reserve athletic activity, the official letter is to be a full five-inch (5") block letter, the color to be the same as the varsity award.
 
6. Service stripes: Varsity team letter winners shall have service stripes granted simultaneously with the letter; one stripe for each season of competition, in any sport, woven in the left arm of the sweater, mid-way between the shoulder and elbow (5/8" wide), in the color of the school. The maximum number of service stripes to be worn will be four (4).
 
7. "All Catholic" Service Stripes: "All Catholic" service stripes of white, or where the letter is white, a gold or red stripe shall be awarded.
 
"All State" Service Stripes of blue shall be awarded to all athletes who earned a place on the "All State" First Team by the Associated Press, United Press, The Detroit News, or Detroit Free Press, in the class designated.
 
Any athlete placed on the mythical varsity teams, in all sports by the above media of Coaches Association, will have the right to wear the "All Catholic" stripe on the sleeve above whatever other stripes that may previously have been awarded.
 
The number of awarded "All Catholic" medals shall be as follows:
 
*a. Baseball: Nine (9) in each section
*b. Basketball: Boys: Six (6) in each Section; Girls: Six (6) in each Section
*c. Cross Country: The first 20 runners in the Catholic League, A-B & C-D Divisions Championship Meets.
*d. Football: Eleven (11) in each section (offensive and defensive)
*e. Golf: The ten (10) low scores in the Catholic League Championship Meet or City Finals.
*f. Soccer: Boys and Girls: Twelve (12) selected by the Coaches from across two sections.
*g. Softball: Nine (9) in each section
*h. Swimming: The first three (3) to finish, in any event, in the Catholic League Championship Meet; The first place relays.
*i. Tennis: Seventeen (17) maximum. A predetermined number is taken from the Catholic League Championship finalists and a predetermined number may be selected by the Coaches at large.
*j. Track and Field: The first three (3) contestants to finish in individual events in the Catholic League Championships (A-B and C-D); and the team which finishes first in the relays.
*k. Volleyball: Six (6) in each section
 
* - Selected by Catholic Coaches Association. Numbers adjusted by Coaches Assn. Others determined by finish at Catholic League Championship.
 

Awards
 
The Catholic League shall award suitable, permanent trophies to schools who are designated Catholic High School League Champions and Catholic High School League Finalist (Runner-Up) by Play-Off System.
 
Sectional Championships shall be awarded to the first place team. A Sectional Champion is determined, in case of ties, by the sectional method to designate Play-Off position. (Example: 21 point system in Football, or as determined per individual sport).
 
In the event that two or more teams are tied with exact sectional records for first place, the Sectional Championship trophy shall be awarded as the tie breaker provides. The other tied team may, at their own expense, purchase a trophy through the League Director designated as Co-Champions. This applies to Varsity or Jr. Varsity sectional trophies. The Catholic League will publicly recognize, introduce and present the additional trophies to those teams with exact sectional records. (Board approved 12-10-91).
 
In sports where Play-Offs or League Championships are not held, a Sectional Champion will be determined by the Play-Off selection method for that sport.
 
Freshmen Sectional Championship Trophies will be awarded. (Board approved 4/28/98).
 
League awards to individualized contestants shall be made to all sports finalists by the League, providing the budgeted receipts are available, as follows:
 
Basketball - 252
Baseball - 80
Golf - 42
Cross Country - 80
Football Champions - 380
Track (A-B & C-D) - 690
Swimming (1-2-3) - 132
Tennis - 48
Cheerleading - 64
Softball - 80
Volleyball - 72
Soccer - 100

2,189 MEDALS AWARDED (BOYS & GIRLS)
 
Varsity coaches of Catholic High School League Championship teams shall be presented a plaque commemorating the achievement, when budget permits.
 
Individual awards must be within the M.H.S.A.A. Regulations.
 
Schools or sections may not award individual or special awards, charge fees or assessments except those regulated by the League Office. (CHSL Regulation 11 A).
 
The League shall award:

Walt Bazylewicz Athlete of the Year Award: 1 male, 1 female
Class Act Award: 1 to each section - Fall & Winter Spectator Sports
 
Scholar-Athlete Leader Awards
One award for each of the following:
 
Sam Madden Award, Boys Basketball
John Shada Award, Football
Ralph Owen Award, Baseball
Joe Pascuzzi Award, Boys Track
Frank Guyott Award, Boys Cross Country
Bernie Krzywada Award, Boys Swimming

Selection Clarification (Board approved March 7, 2000)
 
The CHSL Executive Board determined that written information should be established regarding the point values (1, 2, or 3) given under each award criteria - scholarship, athletics and leadership (commonly known as school/community activities). 3 is the highest. No half numbers.
 
Scholarship
1. Minimum required GPA 3.2.
2. At least a GPA higher than a 3.5. In the upper one third of their class.
3. At or near the highest grade point average that the school awards. A list will be provided of each school's highest possible GPA, including advanced placement classes. In the top ten percent of the senior class.
 
Athletics
1. Participated in the sport on the Varsity level during the Senior year.
2. Participant for two years or more in the sport. Honored as All League or All Area-All City or an honorable mention athlete. At least one significant contribution as stated by the coach or athletic director.
3. Should be at least an All Catholic honoree. Two years on Varsity. Significant contributions as stated by the coach or athletic director in at least 2 areas. Team captain or team leader.
 
Leadership - School - Community Service
1. Activity or involvement in school sports or attendance at a school - community activity.
2. Other than athletics, membership or involvement in one significant school - community organization/activity.
3. Other than athletics, leadership (officer) in one significant school - community activity. Membership or involvement in two or more school - community organizations/activities.
 
Selection Process: - April Meeting
First Round:
Two Board Members will be given one original application. The total core, as above will be assigned (nine the highest). If unsure of a score (3,2,1), members will ask other members to assign a score, 3,2,1.

Semi Finals: The final two or three forms per sport will be duplicated for the entire executive board who will briefly discuss the nominees and then vote 3,2,1 on each form for the top nominee, three still the highest. Board Members may speak, but not vote, if their own student is a finalist.

Finals: The League Office will total all votes and award the winner, provided they attend the June Banquet.
