Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Phil)
 
Purpose
The purpose of the Bachelor of Philosophy program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide an undergraduate degree in a two-year format with a major in philosophy for students who already possess a bachelor degree.


Goals

  1. Students are capable of reading and listening, writing and speaking with acumen.
  2. Students are capable of inquiry, i.e., thinking logically and abstractly, and analyzing critically.
  3. Students know the cultural heritage, ancient and modern, that belongs to them and their fellow citizens.
  4. Students have a capacity for exploring the life and problems of their own communities and other societies and nations.
  5. Students understand the basic principles and practices of the way the natural sciences and technology approach reality.
  6. Students appreciate the fundamental principles of mathematics and understand the way mathematics is applied in science and everyday life.
  7. Students assess human activities and endeavors according to a transcendent standard of objective and universal truth.

Program Requirements

  1. A minimum of 66 credit hours must be earned through completion of the course of study.
  2. No less than 30 credit hours shall be earned in residence at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
  3. Transferring students must earn credit for a minimum of two courses in philosophy at SHMS and complete a minimum of one full year of study at SHMS before qualifying for the degree.
  4. Students must maintain a C average (2.0) for the required 60 semester hours (120 quality points).
  5. Students must maintain a C average (2.0) for the courses earned in philosophy.
