Intermediate Diploma in Music Ministry Program
Course of Study

There is currently a moratorium on admissions due to program revisions.
 
The purpose of the Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma Program in Music Ministry at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide students with an in-depth course of study in the area of Liturgical Music Ministry.
 

Goals
SHMS strives to instill in its Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma in Music Ministry recipients an ability to:
  1. Choose ritual music with an understanding of its function, appropriateness and musical value.
  2. Lead the faithful in song with their instrumental or vocal disciplines, with integrity and a sense of the beautiful, demonstrating preparedness through technical precision, control and innovation.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of ritual music of the past by developing an acquaintance with this music and finding new uses for it.

Admissions Process
A student interested in enrolling in a course of studies that would lead to a Basic Undergraduate Diploma should complete the
admissions process with the Institute for Ministry and have received acceptance notification.


Admission Requirements
  1. A completed application form
  2. A completed Basic Undergraduate Diploma in Music Ministry and accompanying student dossier, or the equivalent and the following:
    1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
    2. Official transcripts from high schools/colleges. These should be requested by the student from those institutions previously attended and sent to the SHMS Registrar.
    3. A basic competency in your major instrument, demonstrated through an audition.
    4. A vocation to music ministry, determined through an interview with Institute for Ministry personnel.
    5. Active involvement in a parish music program.
    6. Three letters of recommendation from persons in a position to judge the applicant's aptitude and readiness for the course of study (Pastor, professional minister, etc.)
    7. Complete a skills assessment in the SHMS Learning Center which will include a short autobiographical essay.

General Requirements
  1. Completion of the specific course of study
  2. A minimum of 14 semester hours of credit must be earned at SHMS
  3. A student must maintain a C average (2.0)

Exit Requirements
Upon completion of course work each candidate must complete an IFM/SHMS Evaluation Process.
