The purpose of the Intermediate Undergraduate Pastoral Studies Diploma Program in the various concentrations is to provide students with a foundation for ministry. Twenty-two to twenty-eight credit hours are required. This course of study constitutes a partial fulfillment of the requirements for Archdiocesan Certification of volunteers and professionals in ministry, and may be used as a component of the Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.) Degree.
Admissions Process A student interested in enrolling in a course of studies that would lead to a Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry should complete the initial admissions process with the Institute for Ministry and have received acceptance notification.
General Requirements
- New students must complete the initial admissions process to SHMS for undergraduate commuters and receive notification of acceptance.
- A minimum of 22-28 semester hours of credit must be earned.
- A minimum of 14 semester hours of credit must be earned at SHMS.
- Student must maintain a C (2.0) average.
Specific Level Requirements
- Interview with the academic advisor.
- Completion of the application form for matriculation.
- A Basic Undergraduate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry.
- Active involvement in a parish ministry.
- Acceptance as a candidate for an Intermediate Diploma.

- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership within their area of concentration.

Undergraduate Catechetics SHMS strives to instill in its Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma recipients an ability to:
- Articulate the Catholic Faith and Tradition in a ministerial setting.
- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership by being a catechist in the parochial setting.
- Articulate the Catholic Faith and Tradition in a ministerial setting.
- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership by collaborating with the pastor and acting as a resource person and identifying and nurturing the gifts of the people.
Undergraduate Youth Ministry There is currently a moratorium on admissions due to program revisions.

- Articulate the Catholic Faith and Tradition in a ministerial setting.
- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership by motivating young people to participate responsibly in the life, mission, and work of the local faith community.
Undergraduate Christian Service There is currently a moratorium on admissions due to program revisions.
SHMS strives to instill in its Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma recipients an ability to:
- Articulate the Catholic Faith and Tradition in a ministerial setting.
- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership by motivating others to respond to human needs and promote justice whether locally or in the broader community of the Church.
SHMS strives to instill in its Intermediate Undergraduate Diploma recipients an ability to:
- Articulate the Catholic Faith and Tradition, in a ministerial setting.
- Foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of those whom they serve.
- Exercise leadership by fostering the communal worship of God within the local parish faith community according to approved guidelines.
