MOSAIC, Fall 2009
 
Fr. Michael Byrnes, vice rector and dean of formation, served as a co-trainer in the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds program, delivering the four-day module "Preparing for Leadership" for two different priest cohorts. About thirty men from the Diocese of Scranton met in June, and a similar number from the Dioceses of Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Little Rock met in July.
 
Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, associate professor of spirituality and systematic theology, has been on sabbatical for the winter term writing a book, Weaving Faith and Experience: Women's Perspective on the Middle Years, for the new St. Anthony Messenger series, "Call to Holiness," a groundbreaking eight volumeseries on women's spirituality. These books are available in the seminary bookstore and Detroit's Catholic Bookstore. Her book will be available spring 2010.
 
Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy, attained the STL degree, the Licentiate in Sacred Theology, granted by the University of St. Thomas (the Angelicum), Rome, in April. Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, is the co-editor of De Maria Numquam Satis: The Significance of the Catholic Doctrines on the Blessed Virgin Mary for All People (University Press of America, 2009). His article, "Francisco Suárez, S.J. (1548-1617) on Mary's Virginitas in Partu and Subsequent Doctrinal Development," was accepted by the Mariological Society of America for publication in its journal, Marian Studies. He was an instructor for the Ecclesial Ministry Institute of the Diocese of Marquette, April 17-18; gave a talk on John Paul II's writings, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth, Michigan, May 15; and was one of the speakers for the retreat of Legion of Mary, St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, Detroit, July 18. Teresa Tomeo of Ave Maria Radio interviewed him on the new papal encyclical, Carits in Veritate, July 10.
 
Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, was interviewed on "The Journey Home" program with Marcus Grodi on EWTN, July 13, and interviewed on EWTN's "Bookmark" program regarding her commentary on the Gospel of Mark, July 14. She gave these presentations: "St. Paul and the Wars of the Ring," Fellowship of St. Paul, SHMS, April 17; "Becoming Women of Peace," Boston Catholic Women's Conference, April 19; "St. Paul, Ephesians 5 and Same-Sex Marriage," Ave Maria School of Law, Naples, Florida, April 30; "The Woman at the Well," Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Temperance, Michigan, May 14; "St. Paul the Mystic," Coming Home Network International Conference, Columbus, Ohio, May 16; "Wars of the Ring," Ave Maria Founders' Club, Ann Arbor, Michigan, May 19; "Digging for Gold in the Gospel of Mark," Men's Spiritual Movement, Brighton, Michigan, May 21; "How Theology of the Body Can Help Us Win the Battle for the Family," Catholic Women's Luncheon, SHMS, June 3; "Christ Appeals to the Resurrection," Second International Theology of the Body Symposium, Maynooth, Ireland, June 12; "The Woman at the Well," "Old Testament Wars and the Spiritual Battle" and "Women and the Church," National Catholic Bible Conference, Denver, Colorado, June 26-28; and "Introduction to the Theology of the Body," Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 29. She gave seven talks on spiritual renewal and on the theology of the body, Celebrate conference, Borger, Holland, July 24-31, and a presentation on the hermeneutical approach of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture at a continuing seminar of the Catholic Biblical Association, Omaha, Nebraska, August 3. She was interviewed on the "Deep in Scripture" radio program, June 24, and on Relevant Radio, April 27 and June 22.
 
Msgr. Robert Humitz, adjunct professor of the course "Dynamics of Parish Leadership," had an article published in the Summer 2009 issue of Church magazine, entitled "When a Pastor Meets His New Parish." The article details a process that a pastor might use as he encounters a new parish assignment.
 
Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, preached a retreat to priests of the Diocese of Gary in Mundelein, Illinois, on the theme, "Praying the Psalms in Christ," June 8-12, and attended the priestly ordination of Fr. Leni Cubas, a Sacred Heart alumnus, Cajamarca, Peru, June 26-July 2.
 
Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, published a book review of Bernard Green, The Soteriology of Leo the Great, in Journal of Theological Studies, 60 (2009); gave a weekend retreat on "The Life of a Disciple," Beirut, Lebanon, May 8-10; delivered a paper at the North American Patristics Society meeting "Cyril of Alexandria on the Despoiling of Hades," Chicago, Illinois, May 22; led a men's retreat on key figures from the Bible, Bastogne, Belgium, July 17-20; and presented five lectures on the Sermon on the Mount to a student conference, Leuven, Belgium, July 26-31.
 
Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology, was interviewed for the story, "'Charity in Truth' encyclical hailed for insight, guidance," The Michigan Catholic (July 17), on Pope Benedict XVI's social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. He gave a talk on moral theology for the deacons of the Diocese of Kalamazoo, April 18; was signatory to E. Christian Brugger, et al., "Reply to the Jesuit Consortium [on Bioethics]" "Undue Burden," Ethics & Medics (June 2009); was invited to be a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology; served as a theological censor for a book; and continued to direct several MA and STL theses.
 
Mr. Ralph Martin, assistant professor of theology, attained the STL degree, the Licentiate in Sacred Theology, granted by the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., in May. He gave these presentations: May 23-24, lectures in Winnipeg, Canada, on holiness and evangelization; June 13, Parish Renewal Day, St. Frances de Chantal Parish, New York; July 14-15, talks on "The Wisdom of the Saints and Religious Life," conference for religious sisters, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio; July 24-25, talks on holiness to catechists, youth ministers and DREs, Don Bosco Conference, Franciscan University of Steubenville. He taught an intensive MA Theology course on "Theology and Spirituality of Evangelization," Franciscan University of Steubenville, June 22-July 10.
 
Fr. John M. McDermott, SJ, professor of theology, gave a talk "The Role of the Theological Virtues in Benedict XVI's Understanding of the Reason-Faith Relation," Jesuit Colloquium on Papal Thought, Georgetown University, June 8, and spoke on "The International Theological Committee and the Natural Law," Ave Maria School of Law, Naples, Florida. He published two articles: "The Mystery of Freedom," Lateranum 74 (2008) and "How Did Jesus Know He Was God? The Ontological Psychology of Mark 10:17- 22," Irish Theological Quarterly 74 (2009). He attended as a consulter the meeting of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine, San Antonio, Texas, June 16.
 
Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development, published two consultations in the 2008 CLSA Advisory Opinions; his analysis of possible canonical responses to Catholic legislative support for the Freedom of Choice Act was translated into French and published in Respublica Christiana (Paris); and his comments on parenting a deaf child appeared as "Raising a Deaf Daughter," The Holley Institute Newsletter (Spring 2009). He gave interviews on various canonical topics to Michigan radio personalities Al Kresta and Teresa Tomeo, and his blog commentary on a number of current issues was picked up by organizations such as LifeSite News, the Catholic News Agency and Christifidelis.
 
Dr. Janet E. Smith, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics, received an honorary doctorate from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, May 20. She taught the course "Love and Responsibility," Theology of the Body Institute, Exton, Pennsylvania, June 14-20. She published "The common-sense case against same-sex unions," Our Sunday Visitor (June 21), and "Adopting Embryos: Why Not?" National Catholic Register (April 5-11). She gave these presentations: "The Eucharist and the Theology of the Body," Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth, Michigan, June 13; "The Spectacular Story of the Genesis of HV" and "Family as a Path to Holiness," One More Soul, Saskatoon, California, June 6; "Contraception: Why Not?" Catholic Physicians Guild, Sarnia, Canada, May 30; "The Church's Teaching on Homosexuality," Our Lady of Good Counsel, Plymouth, May 27; "Humanae Vitae and Conscience," Archdiocese of Baltimore, Towson, Maryland, May 9; "Why Green Sex Is Best," Busboys and Poets, Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., Washington, D.C., April 29; "How to Preach on Humanae Vitae," Priest's Day, Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., April 29; "Celebrating the Culture of Life," Annual Pro-life Conference, Kansas City, Kansas, April 17; "Why Green Sex is Best," Theology on Tap, Kansas City, April 17; "How to Preach on Humanae Vitae," Priests' Day Conference, Diocese of Kansas City, Missouri, and Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, April 17 (2 talks); "Why Green Sex Is Best" and "Why Premarital Sex is Stupid," Aquinas Institute, Boulder, Colorado, April 6.
 
Fr. Daniel Trapp, associate professor of systematic theology, liturgy and sacraments, led the spiritual component of the SHMS seminarians' pilgrimage to the Holy Land, April 29-May 28. He gave the presentation "Becoming Awake to the Lord: Adoration and Wisdom from Mount Sinai," Our Lady of Good Counsel/Real Presence Association of Michigan conference on the Eucharist, June 13.
 
Dr. Peter Williamson, Adam Cardinal Maida Chair of Sacred Scripture, gave these presentations: "St. Paul's Motives and Message in Evangelization" and "St. Paul's Methods of Evangelization," National Catholic Bible Conference, Denver, Colorado, June 27; five talks on "Ephesians for the Life and Mission of the Church," International Institute for Clergy Formation, Long Branch, New Jersey, June 21-25; "Scripture Across the Curriculum," Inaugural Conference Monsignor Jerome D. Quinn Institute for Biblical Studies, St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, June 9-11; "Imitating St. Paul's Courage to Evangelize," Renewal Ministries Annual Gathering, St. John Center, Plymouth, Michigan, May 31; "How Catholics Read the Bible," St. Gerald Parish, Farmington, Michigan, April 22; and "Advice from St. Paul for Hard Times," Daughters of St. Francis DeSales, Brooklyn, Michigan, April 18. He facilitated and gave two presentations at a Life in the Spirit Seminar, St. Joseph Parish, South Lyon, Michigan, May 23; co-directed a retreat for clergy of the Archdiocese of Detroit, St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, Detroit, giving four conferences on St. Paul, May 11-15; and helped to lead a "Footsteps of St. Paul Pilgrimage" to Turkey, April 30-May 10. He gave a seminar on "Practical Lessons from St. Paul for the New Evangelization," Catholic Evangelization Center of the Archdiocese of Kaunas, Lithuania, April 29; participated in the conference Evangelization in Today's World: Origins, Challenges, Perspectives, sponsored by the Catholic theology faculty of Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, and presented "In Demonstration of the Spirit and Power," April 28. He received a one-year appointment as a Visiting Scholar, University of Michigan, which began in July, that allows him to do research as he continues his teaching at SHMS.
