The Collections

The Edmund Cardinal Szoka Library contains more than 115,000 books, a bound periodical collection, over 500 journal/ periodical subscriptions, microforms, an audio cassette and video collection, a Seminary archive and a rare book room.

The library is currently located on 2 floors of Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

The Main Library
The Main Library is located directly under the Chapel on the lower level. It houses the theology, philosophy and liberal arts collections of the Cardinal Szoka Library, as well as complementary collections in history, literature and the fine arts.

The Main Library also houses the audio and video collection, theology indexes and atlases, a browsing collection of current periodical issues, and a large reference collection. A photocopy machine, microfilm machine, and book sale shelf are provided for the convenience of our patrons.

The Main Library contains the administrative and technical staff offices. Reference services, and  membership purchases are also available at this location.

The first floor library, known as the Leo J. Ward Reading Room, is the original Seminary Library. Fitted with arched windows, a cork-tile floor, oak tables and twin spiral staircases leading to a small balcony, the Ward Reading Room is a favorite stop on Seminary tours.

The Reading Room contains the bound periodical collection (arranged A-Z), the Liberal arts indexes, and a copy machine.  A full-time clerk is available in the office adjacent to the room, as is the rare book collection and archive (available by appointment only).

The staff of the Cardinal Szoka Library are currently in the process of  completing a long-term consolidation project. This is allowing us to merge the college and graduate collections by subject, and make them more accessible to our patrons. During this period  we ask your patience. If you cannot locate an item, please ask a staff member for assistance.
