Fr. Nusbaum, a priest of the Albany, New York Diocese is a Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

 

Born in 1934 on a farm near Temperance, Michigan, he attended Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio and transferred his last year to Hope Preparatory School in Newburgh, New York.  He continued studies in Hope College graduating in 1954.  Following, he attended the International College run by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Rome, Italy.  There he received the Ph.L. and S.T.B. from the Gregorian University.  He also studied for two years at the École Saint Grégoire of the Paris Conservatory where he received their Diplomé en musique.  After returning to the United States in 1962 Fr. Nusbaum received his M.A. in Theology from the Catholic University and an M.A. in Classical Languages, Paleography from St. Louis University.  He completed his Ph.D. in Medieval Studies at Fordham University and continued studies in psychology and counseling at Catholic University and UCLA.

 

Ordained a priest in 1961, Fr. Nusbaum served as associate pastor at St. Mary's Haines Falls, New York, and began his teaching career including four years at Hope College in Newburgh, New York, one year at Penn State, Marymount University in Virginia and 34 years at Mount Saint Mary's University and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  He has taught courses in Patrology, Latin, Music, and Liturgical Music.  He served as the campus chaplain, spiritual director, academic dean, and chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Division.  Fr. Nusbaum served as the president of the National Association of College and University Chaplains, and also opened a European campus for Mount Saint Mary's University in Florence, Italy and taught there for one year.

 

Returning to Michigan in 2003, Fr. Nusbaum accepted the assignment to administer pastorally Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Wyandotte for one year and then accepted appointment as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Temperance.  Fr. Nusbaum retired in 2007 and was appointed by His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida as Interim Director of Education for the Archdiocese of Detroit.  He now resides at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and serves as spiritual director and professor in the College of Liberal Arts.
