Search Tips
Still searching for that information? Can't find the perfect site for your needs? Try doing a "meta-search". Several search engines on the web are designed to harness the power of other search engines and search more sites simultaneously, saving you time and effort. They use a software that acts as a spider, reaching out and enslaving other engines. Try "keyword" and "subject" searches on the following meta-search engines:

Photo Images and Sounds on the Web:
Are you preparing a presentation and need an image or a sound clip? Try the following sites for free access to public domain images and audio clips. Download images of paintings or clip art, or find a piece of music or nature sound that suits your resentation, paper, or website.

  • Web Shots – includes many religious images
  • Ditto.com – includes a variety of images
  • Audio files – Searchable by format, channel, and subject

A Few Internet Tips
If you don't feel like a veteran of the "cyber wars", you are not alone! Searching for helpful information on the Internet can be an overwhelming proposition, especially if you were not raised at a computer key board. Here are a few simple tips to help you on your cyber research trip.

The Internet was originally developed as a government project. Today it is a global connector for computers throughout the world. Using various software, users can send e-mail, access online library catalogs, search full text documents, find and print a map, download music and artwork, join in live chats, and purchase item from stores and services. And that's just the beginning. Keep the following issues in mind when surfing the web for anything.

Nothing is truly private on the Internet.
Be wary of giving out your name, address, and phone numbers. Never give out a social security number or credit card number just because a site requests it for you to continue. Only provide a credit card or personal information if it is a reputable site and the site indicates that they are using security software to transfer the data. When in doubt, be safe and don't send out any personal information.

Web Addresses
URL (Universal Resource Locator) is the official name of a site address. (e.g.- ) The address is often the name of the company or institution that owns or runs the site. The catchy name is not the actual address but rather a mask for a series of numbers that make up the I.D. for the computer storing the site.

Browsers
Browsers are simply software that allows you to search the Internet. Companies like AOL or Yahoo! have their own browsers, and that is the homepage you pull up when you go to those sites. They usually offer lots of information such as weather reports, horoscopes, subject directories that you can search, and stock reports. They also have a search window where you can type in a subject for the browser to go and seek for you.

When doing academic research on the internet, document, document, document!  Websites are very static. They  can be there on the web one day and disappear the next.  If you want to use that research information for a paper or presentation, make sure to document the following:
  • The name of the site.
  • The date you searched it.
  • Who owns the site.
  • The page or section you are citing.
Many sites are copyrighted and have a copyright symbol on the homepage.  Technically all sites are covered under copyright law the minute they are created  (this is true of all original documents.)  You may not download large portions of a site for a presentation or to be placed in a paper.  You may cite excerpts of a site just as you would a book.  But you must fully document and credit the site.

Downloading music, artwork, or full text owned by someone is against copyright law, and is unethical.

A Final Tip
Know what kind of site you are browsing.  When doing serious research, avoid sites with addresses ending in ".com" unless you know the owner or have information that the site is rigorous in their practices.  Commercial sites (.com's) seek to sell or advertise a product, a person, or an idea.  Sites offered by colleges or universities, museums, and other non-profit institutions must register for ".edu" or ".org" addresses.  These are harder to obtain and require extensive documentation.  Resources found on these sites, particularly ."edu" addressed, are more reliable for academic research.
