Detroit, Michigan, February 23, 2009—Most Rev. Charles Chaput, archbishop of Denver, will present the keynote address at the one-day conference, "Lessons from St. Paul for the New Evangelization," sponsored by Sacred Heart Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The conference will be held Saturday, March 21, at Sacred Heart, 2701 Chicago Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan.

Sacred Heart is presenting the conference in response to Pope Benedict XVI proclaiming a "Jubilee Year of St. Paul," that extends from June 2008 until June 2009. The jubilee year commemorates the two thousandth birthday of apostle and missionary St. Paul. He wrote many of the epistles, or letters to the churches, that make up much of the Christian New Testament and provide the foundation for Christian beliefs. Pope Benedict encourages Catholic parishes, dioceses and institutions during this year to create conferences and publications that make St. Paul's life and teachings more widely known.

In this spirit, Archbishop Chaput will speak on "Lessons from St. Paul for Evangelizing the Contemporary Culture." A second speaker, Sherry Weddell, co-founder of the Catherine of Siena Institute in Colorado, will talk on "Evangelizing Postmodern Catholics."

The conference will be practically oriented, featuring fourteen workshops conducted by well known church leaders who are working in the field to spread the gospel message in a new way. Three faculty members of Sacred Heart, who are New Testament scholars, will conduct a panel discussion on aspects of St. Paul's ministry that will be of hands-on help in the work of evangelization.

Early registration costs for attending "Lessons from St. Paul for the New Evangelization" are $65 for a full day including lunch and dinner, and $50 for a full day without meals. After March 6, the costs rise to $75 with meals/$60 without. Those seeking more information can call (313) 883-8556 or email lessonsfromstpaul@shms.edu.
