What's New With the Faculty?
Fr. Michael Byrnes, vice rector and dean of formation, traveled to New Orleans to serve as a co-presenter of "Preparing for Leadership" to twenty-one priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, October 27-30. This is the first of six residential training modules of the "Good Leaders, Good Shepherds" program, sponsored by the Catholic Leadership Institute.
Fr. Richard J. Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, presented "Legal Factors in the Case of St. Paul", Ave Maria School of Law, Ann Arbor, Michigan. In response to Pope Benedict's proclamation of The Year of St. Paul, Father presented his educational program, "St. Paul: Persecutor, Apostle, Prisoner, Martyr," before these Michigan audiences: The Young Adult Scripture Symposium, Southfield; St. Paul of Tarsus Parish, Clinton Township; St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Shelby Township; the Cardinal Club, Grosse Pointe; Holy Family Parish, Memphis. Crossroad Publishing reprinted his book, Paul in Chains: Roman Imprisonment and the Letters of Paul, in a Year of St. Paul edition. Father Cassidy concelebrated at the funeral Masses for Cardinal Avery Dulles, SJ, Fordham University and St. Patrick Cathedral, New York, December 17 and 18.
Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, Hathaway, associate professor of spirituality and systematic theology, gave the keynote address, "The Role of Friendship in Our Relationship with God and With Others", Catholic Women's Conference, San Antonio, Texas, September 21-22. She presented "Is the Church Still Relevant?", Pontiac Vicariate, October 4, and "Who Is My Neighbor?," Pastoral Ministers' Association, October 23. She represented Sacred Heart at the ATS conference "Faculty Vocation and Governance Consultation," October 17-19, was the keynote speaker at the Downriver Vicariate assembly, "What Does it Mean To Be Church?," November 21, and presented "The Ages of a Woman's Spirituality," Archdiocesan Women's Advent Retreat, December 6. She is on sabbatical winter term 2009 to write a book, Weaving Faith and Experience: A Woman's Perspective on the Middle Years, for the St. Anthony Press series, "Call to Holiness."
Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy, presented "The God of Philosophy and of the Holy Scriptures: Herman Bavinck and John Paul II," conference on "A Pearl and a Leaven: Herman Bavinck for the Twenty-First Century," Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, September 18-20, and "The Legacy of Ex Corde Ecclesiae," conference on "Mission, Worldview and the Christian University," Redeemer University College, Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, January 7- 10. He published "Eucharistic Personalism," in The Liturgical Subject: Subject, Subjectivity and the Human Person in Contemporary Liturgical Discussion and Critique, edited by James G. Leachman, OSB (SCM Press, 2008).
Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, co-edited Called to Holiness and Communion: Vatican II on the Church (University of Scranton Press, 2008), and authored What the Church Teaches About Sex: God's Plan for Human Happiness (Our Sunday Visitor, 2008). He gave these presentations: "The Immaculate Conception from an Ecumenical Perspective," International Congress of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, August 12; "Suárez in Relation to Anselm, Aquinas and Scotus on Proving God's Existence (DM 29)," international conference on "Suárez's Metaphysics," Villa Lanna, Prague, Czech Republic, October 1; "Mary: the Exemplar of Faithful Love for Virgins, Spouses, Mothers and the Church," conference commemorating Mulieris Dignitatem, John Paul II Cultural Center, Washington, D.C., October 4. He served as the reviewer of the Platonism and Neoplatonism Group of the American Academy of Religion, Chicago, Illinois, which was seeking renewal by the Academy at its annual meeting, November 1-3. He presented "St. Paul, the Natural Law and the Catholic Tradition," Ave Maria School of Law, as part of a lecture series on "St. Paul and the Natural Law," November 21. He continues to teach a theology class on Thursday evenings at St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Parish, Troy, Michigan.
Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, gave these talks: "What Marriage Means; Why Marriage Matters," Legatus Grand Rapids Chapter, September 2; "Evangelization in the Power of the Holy Spirit," diocesan youth ministers' retreat, Phoenix, Arizona, September 20; "The Mystery of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians," Letter and Spirit Conference, St. Paul Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 15. She was a guest on Ave Maria Radio, Michigan Catholic Radio, Sacred Heart Radio and Relevant Radio, and her interview with Zenit News Service appeared on November 11. She gave presentations on the Bishops' Synod on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church" at a continuing seminar of the Catholic Biblical Association, New York, August 5; to Sacred Heart faculty members, November 19; and to Scripture and Hermeneutics Project members, Society of Biblical Literature convention, Boston, Massachusetts, November 21. Her book The Gospel of Mark appeared in October as the first volume of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, a new biblical commentary series co-edited by Dr. Peter Williamson and Mary Healy.
Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, presented: "It is No Longer I Who Live, but Christ Who Lives in Me," Fellowship of St. Paul at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, October 10, and "The Evangelical Counsels and the Priesthood" to the first year Sacred Heart theologians, November 8.
Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, gave four lectures on the cardinal virtues to University Christian Outreach, Ann Arbor, August 4-7; gave three lectures on the theology of St. Paul to the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, Ann Arbor, October 1, 15, 29; gave a lecture "St. Paul and the Handing-on of a Way of Life," St. Francis Parish, November 1; published a book review of Bernard Green's The Soteriology of Leo the Great, in Journal of Theological Studies.
Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral theology, published: book review of Bioethical Issues and the Family, Dr. Joseph Alencherry (eds.) (CANA Publications, 2005), Linacre Quarterly Vol. 75, No. 2 (May 2008); review essay "The Faith of a Geneticist: Francis S. Collins on Bioethics and Its Foundations," The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly (Autumn 2008); "Iraq, the 'Surge,' and Just-War Theory: Some Thoughts about the Current Situation in Light of Catholic Morality," Catholic Social Scientists Review Vol. 13 (2008). His presentation "Techne or Virtue? Humanae Vitae in Context at Forty," was included in the packet for the "Co-Creating with God: Humanae Vitae Today" conference at Sacred Heart, September 20. He was interviewed in The Michigan Catholic (May 23) for the story "Catholic pharmacists may face moral dilemma." He served as a second reader for an STL thesis and directed an MA thesis, fall term 2008.

Dr. Michael J. McCallion, Fr. William Cunningham Chair of Catholic Social Analysis and director of the Institute for Research on the New Evangelization (IRNE), published a review of Dr. Jerome Baggett's book Sense of the Faithful: How American Catholics Live Their Faith (Oxford University Press, 2009) at Catholic Books Review. He attended the Society for the Sociological Study of Religion and Religious Research Association National Meetings, Louisville, Kentucky, October 2008, along with Dr. Ben Bennett-Carpenter of IRNE and Laura Pollacia-Scanlon, a MAPS student from Sacred Heart, each presenting a paper on their New Evangelization research. Dr. McCallion and Dr. Bennett-Carpenter completed a social survey on the New Evangelization that will be administered sometime in 2009, and completed a grant application to Our Sunday Visitor for the 2009 fiscal year. He gave three guest lectures in Sr. Mary Lou Putrow's course, Pastoral Care Across Cultures, fall term.
Fr. John McDermott, SJ, professor of theology, published "Didn't Jesus Know that He was God? Mark 10:17-22," Irish Theological Quarterly 73 (2008); "Is Death Evil? A Question for Father Peter Ryan, SJ: Part II," Fellowship of Catholic Scholars Quarterly 31/3 (Fall 2008); review of John Redford's Born of a Virgin: Proving the Miracle from the Gospels, Faith Magazine (Nov-Dec 2008). He participated in the Westchester Institute's Scholars Forum discussion on "The Church's Competence in Applying the Norms of Natural Law," November 6-7; meeting of the International Theological Commission, Dec. 1-5; and served as a consultant at the meeting of the USCCB Doctrinal Committee, November 8-9.
Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development, published his latest monograph, A Modern Guide to Indulgences, through Hillenbrand Books (Liturgy Training Publications, Archdiocese of Chicago). His article, "Canonical and cultural developments culminating in the ordination of deaf men during the twentieth century," appeared in the Josephinum Journal of Theology. He gave an interview on excommunication to Slate Magazine and was featured on various Catholic media broadcasts including Catholic Answers Live and Fully Alive! with Greg and Lisa Popcak. He became a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, completed his two-year term on the Sacred Heart Faculty Affairs Committee, and is now a member of the Faculty Search and Promotion Committee.
Dr. Victor Salas, assistant professor of philosophy, presented a paper "Francisco Suárez, the Analogy of Being, and its Tensions," at the conference "Suárez's Metaphysics: Disputationes Metaphysicae in their Historical and Systematic Context," Prague, Czech Republic, October 1-3. He had these articles accepted for publication: "The Twofold Character of Thomas Aquinas's Analogy of Being," International Philosophical Quarterly; "Francisco Suárez and Analogy: Resolving a Tension," Studia Neoaristotelica; "Hervaeus Natalis and Dietrich von Hildebrand: The Roots of Realist Phenomenology in Scholasticism," with Elizabeth Salas, Angelicum; "The Analogy of Giving and Receiving in the Thought of Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II," Gregorianum; "The Ontology of Analogy in Aquinas: A Response to Laurence Hemming," The Heythrop Journal. Fr. Daniel Trapp, associate professor of systematic theology, helped coordinate the Sacred Heart conference, "Co-Creating with God: Humanae Vitae Today," September 20, and helped coordinate the annual meeting of the Federation of Seminary Spiritual Directors, "Beauty Shaping the Contemplative Heart," London, Ontario, Canada, October 23-26.
Dr. Peter Williamson, Adam Cardinal Maida Chair of Sacred Scripture, published the first two volumes (The Gospel of Mark and First and Second Timothy, Titus) in the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture that he edits with Dr. Mary Healy and Kevin Perrotta, and submitted his manuscript on Ephesians in the same series to Baker Academic; co-chaired with Daniel Harrington, SJ, a continuing seminar at the meeting of the Catholic Biblical Association (August 2-5) on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church" that offered recommendations to the North American delegates to the Synod of Bishops; presented "Biblical Interpretation for the Life and Mission of the Church" at that seminar; spoke on "St. Paul and Evangelization" at Sacred Heart Byzantine Catholic Church (October 11). He spoke on "St. Paul and the Holy Spirit" at: Ave Maria University Founders Club (October 21); St. Joseph Parish, South Lyon, Michigan, (October 27); the Fellowship of St. Paul, Sacred Heart (November 1); and Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor (November 7). He presented at a faculty colloquium on the results of the Synod of Bishops (November 18); led a retreat for the Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Assembly (December 6); and gave eleven talks on "The Spirit of St. Paul," Christ the King Parish, available to the public at Catholic Men Today.
