Art and Architecture

  • Architectural style: English Tudor Gothic

  • Beams, trim and furnishings crafted in solid oak.

  • The stained glass windows in the main chapel and two student chapels are breathtaking to behold. The windows convey the story of creation, salvation and models of sanctity. Michigan resident, Margaret Bouchez Cavanaugh designed the stained glass for both student chapels.

  • Sacred Heart Major Seminary houses the largest collection of Pewabic tile in the State of Michigan. Pewabic tile is a distinct type of tile made only in Detroit. Known for its exquisite design and glaze, Pewabic tile was created by Mary Chase Stratton.

  • Donors to the seminary and chapel in the 1920s include such prominent Detroit families as Fisher, Crowley and Van Antwerp.

  • The "reredos", a backdrop of solid oak above the altar in the main chapel, depicts Jesus' apostles. Its intricate design was handcarved by German artisans.

  • The SHMS gymnasium houses the first spring flooring built in this part of the United States. The Detroit Pistons once practiced in the gym.
