175th AnniversaryCelebrating 175 years

The Archdiocese of Detroit has an interesting and long history and this year marks a special celebration. The diocese has undergone a flux of territories, fires, growth, movement and the help of many dedicated people.

Archdiocese Welcomes Five New Priests
 
Cardinal Maida ordained five men to the priesthood on May 10 before over 900 people at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.  A reception on the cathedral plaza followed the ordination Mass.
 
  • Fr. Lee Acervo was appointed associate pastor, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth.
  • Fr. Charles Altermatt was appointed associate pastor, Most Holy Redeemer Parish, Detroit.
  • Fr. Clint McDonell was appointed associate pastor, Divine Child Parish, Dearborn.
  • Fr. Sama Muma was appointed associate pastor, St. Paul on the Lake Parish, Grosse Pointe Farms.
  • Fr. Mark Prill was appointed associate pastor, St. Anastasia Parish, Troy.

Help for Disaster Victims in Asia
 
Death tolls continue to mount in Myanmar (Burma) and in China from the recent cyclone and earthquake. In Myanmar, an estimated 78,000 were killed by Cyclone Nargis and another 56,000 are missing. In China, the number of earthquake deaths could go as high as 50,000 with 160,000 injured. The Detroit archdiocese is facilitating support to relief groups in both disaster zones.

Operation Rice Bowl is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit and Catholic Relief Services. 75% of the funds raised are used for international relief and development projects and 25% are distributed within the diocese for local programs. CCHD projects in our diocese and throughout the United States support low-income people as they work together to improve educational opportunities, create jobs, and improve access to services for the disabled.
